Background
The Nelson Mail 10th October 2007
A 20-year-old Nelson man who told police he was raped by a 13-year-old girl has admitted having unlawful sexual connection with her. Matthew Robin Jordan admitted three charges of unlawful sexual connection when he appeared in the Nelson District Court Tuesday. He was charged jointly with another man. Prosecutor Sergeant Chris Stringer said that on May 13 Jordan drove the girl to a secluded area near Nelson Airport and asked her to perform a sexual act on him, which she did. Jordan sent the girl a text message at 1.30am on June 23 and asked her to sneak out of her house. She climbed out of her bedroom window and met Jordan and his friend, Mr Stringer said.
Jordan told the girl they were going to his friend's house to have cannabis and sex, and she said, "Whatever." The girl watched a pornographic film and shared a cannabis cigarette with the men before having sex with both of them, Mr Stringer said. The girl got dressed, and Jordan told her he was leaving. She asked him to drive her home but he said his friend would give her money for a taxi and he left. The girl also left the house and phoned home. She was picked up by her father at 3am.
Mr Stringer said the girl underwent a sexual assault examination and told police she had been reluctant but had consented to having sex with both men. When police searched Jordan's house, he was uncooperative and denied having sex with the girl. He later admitted engaging in a sex act with her but said it was because he was being blackmailed. Mr Stringer said Jordan told police he was a victim as he had been raped by the girl. Defence lawyer Tony Bamford said he would explore whether the restorative justice process could be followed during a remand period. Judge Tony Zohrab remanded Jordan on bail until November 7 for sentencing.
