Sentenced to just 4 years in May 1996
Released November 1998
Background
From the Evening Post 20/05/1996
A man was jailed for 5 years 6 months for the rape of a Porirua woman on March 4 when he appeared in the High Court at Wellington on Friday. Terry Elvis Karaka, 18, admitted one charge of sexual violation by rape. Justice Heron said Karaka had known her indirectly through a friend. He had gone to her house and made himself at home. When the woman tried to get him to leave by saying she was going to bed and putting on her nightclothes Karaka made advances to her, became aggressive and raped her. He said Karaka had been subjected to violence as a child, being from a poor family of nine, and had drifted toward a streetkid existence, using drugs and alcohol to excess. Justice Heron said it was unclear if the rape had been because of Karaka's association with the Mongrel Mob but if it was, his future was bleak. Crown prosecutor Mark O'Donoghue said the woman may have had some mental disability and was possibly being taken advantage of by young men.
