Sentenced to 6 months periodic detention and 12 months supervision in September 1996
Background
From Christchurch Press story 4th September 1996
A man charged with assault and indecent assault on a female was given a final
warning by Judge Noble that if he appeared again on similar charges he would go
to jail. Richard John Kingi, 23, a cleaner, was sentenced to six months
periodic detention.
The judge said Kingi had a substantial drinking problem. He needed full-time residential treatment, but a report showed no indication he was prepared to do something about his problem. He said the assaults had occurred while Kingi was drunk, and he had previous convictions for assault. ``I take the view you have drunkenly got your own way for too long.'' Judge Noble also sentenced Kingi to supervision for 12 months on condition he take treatment for alcoholism.
