Background
From Timaru Herald story 6th February 2008
A Templeton man broke into homes and got into bed and indecently assaulted several people in the South Canterbury town he was visiting late last year. Laison Reihana King, 20, unemployed, pleaded guilty to three charges of indecent assault, one of sexual violation, three charges of burglary, attempted
burglary, theft, unlawfully interfering with a car and unlawfully taking a bicycle, when he appeared before Judge David Saunders in the Timaru District Court yesterday.
During his visit to South Canterbury, King was asked to leave a party because of his behaviour. He did, but then broke into a house and got into bed with a man who he then indecently assaulted. The victim had thought King was someone else. The following day King got into other homes that were insecure. One woman awoke to find King sexually violating her. King was convicted and remanded in custody until sentence on March 5
From Timaru Herald story 18th December 2007
A Temuka man has been remanded in custody after appearing in the Timaru District Court yesterday on burglary and sexual offence charges. Laison Reihana King, 19, unemployed, appeared before Kevin Dey JP on four charges of burglary, two charges of indecent assault against a male and a female, and one charge of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. The charges were all laid indictably, and related to alleged offences at four Temuka addresses between 12.30am and 5am on December 15.
From Timaru Herald story 6th March 2008
A young man who broke into Temuka homes and indecently assaulted two victims told the court how sorry he was and how he wanted to turn his life around. Laison Reihana King, 20, unemployed, was sentenced to four-and-a- half years in prison when he appeared before Judge Phil Moran in the Timaru District Court
yesterday.
King had been at a party in the town on the night of December 15, but became drunk and so obnoxious he was asked to leave. All the offending occurred in the following hours. The offending was bizarre, and included King entering three houses and attempting to enter a fourth, Craig O'Connor, for the crown, told the court. King had got into bed with people who were asleep, or in their sleepy state hadn't instantly realised it was a stranger in their bed.
As there was a high risk of King reoffending Mr O'Connor said a starting point of a prison sentence of six to seven years was appropriate. "It doesn't give me any pleasure at all to be sentencing you," Judge Moran said, but added it was serious offending, including the fact that several of the offences equated to home invasion. The sexual assault of one victim had come very close to being rape. Judge Moran said cumulative sentences were required for each set of offences.
For the most serious incident involving the sexual violation and indecent assault of a woman and the burglary of her home, he was sentenced to three years and four months in prison; for the home invasion in which an elderly man was indecently assaulted, he received a sentence of one year and two months, and for the remaining burglaries an eight month sentence - all of which were reduced as Judge Moran considered a term of four-and-a-half years appropriate. King received a concurrent three month sentence for offences including thefts from the properties.
