Background
Knighton was boarding with the victim and her older brother at their father's home. Knighton had been entrusted to babysit the children from time to time and developed a close relationship with the girl when he started sexually abusing her. The girl became pregnant and was hospitalised with severe abdominal pain and had contracted chlamydia which is a sexually transmitted disease. The victim soon after gave birth to a baby girl, who was placed for adoption. Judge Erber said the victim impact report was "amongst the most tragic" he's ever read.
