In the Auckland High Court, Justice Morris said when sentencing Lawter that his lawyer described the crimes as predatory "...that of a hunting animal, preying on its victims, waiting for some victim to come along to pounce on". "It is not a bad word to describe it," the judge told Lawter. "I would add words like brutal and callous." The judge was "reluctantly" unable to have Latwer jailed indefinitely.
