Johansen and Michael Shane Lihou, both aged 21 and described as dangerous, had escaped from Paparoa Prison on Tuesday night.
Lihou was convicted of kidnapping a 16-year-old Christchurch girl in April last year, and holding her captive for five days in North Canterbury before she escaped. He was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison after being found guilty of abduction, six charges of rape, threatening to kill, and weapons charges.
