A 72-year-old Wanganui man was jailed for three years and four months on Thursday, on charges of unlawful sexual connection and indecent acts against two eight year-old girls. Rodney Hugh Lowe, retired, of Wanganui, trembled in the Wanganui District Court dock, at one point taking his inhaler, as Judge Michael Radford detailed the charges against him - two of unlawful sexual connection with a female under 12 and two of indecent acts against a female under 12.

During the sentencing, Judge Radford also highlighted Lowes previous convictions, including a 2000 conviction for an indecent act with intent to assault for which he was sentenced to supervision and received name suppression. "I observe that you were treated leniently on that occasion and it may be because of that these two young girls suffered at your hands," he said.
