A Ngaruawahia man who committed a string of alcohol-fuelled offending was a danger to society and lacked any self control, a court was told. Fredrick Ivan Mabbett, 25, was sentenced yesterday at the Hamilton District Court to two years and three months' jail after pleading guilty to a host of charges including two counts of assaulting a woman, indecent assault, assaulting a child, and injuring with intent to injure.

Mabbett's offending occurred over an 18 month period in Ngaruawahia and took place while Mabbett was heavily intoxicated. His seventh victim was an 11-year-old boy who Mabbett punched in the face in a "random and unprovoked assault". Defence counsel Michael McIvor said Mabbett had been spiralling out of control since his first offence in August 2007.

Although Mabbett had accepted responsibility for his actions he did not remember much of his offending because he was intoxicated. Judge Phillip Connell said Mabbett's offending had created "a state of fear" among his victims who were worried about further random attacks. The judge said Mabbett had shown a complete lack of empathy for his victims and was a danger to society. A pre-sentence report highlighted Mabbett's serious alcohol addiction.
