Background
From the Dominion Post 20th April 2005
A male psychiatric nurse who raped another male after a heavy drinking session has failed to overturn his eight-year prison term. The victim woke during the sex act and fought off Haren Makaea. He chased Makaea but, when unable to catch him, trashed Makaea's car with a spade.

In Auckland District Court, Makaea was found guilty of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. He abandoned an appeal against the conviction and the Court of Appeal at Wellington has dismissed his sentence appeal. The Court of Appeal said the good work Makaea had done as a nurse only partly offset the fact that he took advantage of a drunken, sleeping man, and the severe impact that had on the victim.
