A career criminal who raped the seven-year-old daughter of friends he was staying with, has been jailed for nine years. Richard Manu has appeared in the High Court in Christchurch on two charges or rape and one of unlawful sexual connection. He admitted going into the girl's room and raping her twice after her parents had gone to bed. Manu's lawyer, David Ruth, says Manu had an abused childhood and was addicted to alcohol. The Crown argued Manu should be jailed for eight years. But Justice Young sentenced him to nine years, after giving Manu credit for his early guilty plea. The judge said Manu has around 500 convictions and has spent most of his life in jail.
