This Listener article has a brief summary of this case
August 1994: Widow Doreen Kemp, 76, was murdered and her body sexually interfered with by door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman Phillip Levi Macauley, 29. Earlier the same day, Macauley twice raped another woman, 65, in the suburb of Redcliffs. He had a history of sexual deviance and psychiatric illness going back to when he was 11.
From NZ Herald story 7th April 1995
“A jury in the High Court at Christchurch found a former door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman guilty of the murder of an elderly Rangiora woman and of indecently interfering with her body. Phillip Levi Macauley had pleaded not guilty to murdering Doreen Louisa Kemp, aged 76, and not guilty to indecently interfering with her dead body on August 18 last year. The trail was before Justice Williamson, who remanded Macauley until Wednesday for sentence on the two counts on a charge of sexual violation by rape against an elderly Redcliffes woman that occurred hours before the murder of Mrs Kemp. Macauley pleaded guilty to the Redcliffes charge before the main trail began, but details of the short hearing were suppressed until after the trial.”
