Background
Christchurch Press story 19 May 1998
A man with a background of violence against women has been sent to jail for nine months. Kerry Lester McCuish, 41, unemployed, pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court yesterday to a charge of assaulting a female. Judge Graeme Noble activated a suspended sentence faced by McCuish on a similar charge and added 4 and a half months on the current charge. The second assault was on the same complainant as in the earlier charge.
Judge Noble said both had been drinking, and McCuish had grabbed the complainant by the hair and dragged her down the steps of a tavern. He said violence seemed to be a habit in McCuish's life, with seven previous convictions since 1973, and he had served several years in jail for rape.
