A 70-year-old Whakatane man has been told if he can't keep his hands off little
girls he will die in prison.
Robin Douglas McIlroy was appearing in the Whakatane District Court for sentence on one charge of indecent assault on a child to which he had earlier pleaded guilty.McIlroy was jailed for nine months.
Crown prosecutor Sheree Christensen said McIlroy's offending had not only had a physical impact on the victim but had caused ripples within the young girl's wider hapu.
"The prisoner lacks insight into his offending, lacks empathy toward his victim and is unwilling to undertake any rehabilitative programmes," Ms Christensen said. She asked Judge Lindsay Moore for a prison term. McIlroy's lawyer, Roger Gowing, said a term of intensive supervision would make his client address his issues.
Judge Moore said: "There is a need, even at your age, to get you to face up to your need for help in respect to the problem you have" "A long time ago you received a lengthy prison term for sexual offending against an under-age girl," the judge said. "I am not punishing you again for that offending but it means there is no doubt you have a problem," he said.
Judge Moore told McIlroy he was at an age where people came to realise their time on earth was not unlimited and he needed to needed to think about that. Otherwise he would die in prison.
