Background
The Dominion Post, 9th May 2009
A man whose sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl was discovered after he drove a car into a wall to harm himself has been sentenced to preventive detention.
Christopher John Merrett, 34, unemployed, from Masterton, had pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawful sexual connection, indecent assault and six of possessing objectionable material. Justice Warwick Gendall, in the High Court at Wellington yesterday, said Merrett had pursued a relationship with the girl over the course of a year.
He had sex with her, and made recordings of this and other sex acts. He also encouraged her to kill herself. The judge said he manipulated the girl, driving himself into a wall for attention. He suffered minor injuries and the relationship was discovered when the accident was investigated by police. He had previous similar convictions and had served jail time. He said Merrett's maladjusted sexual interests had persisted for 20 years and there was the potential for further harm to the community. He sentenced Merrett to preventive detention, with a minimum non-parole peroid of five years.
