Sentenced to 24 months with a concurrent 12 months in June 1999
Background
From Christchurch Press story 3rd June 1999
A 41-year-old man who sexually violated a 13-year-old boy has been described as naive and childlike.
Michael John Morrison, a sickness beneficiary, was jailed in the Christchurch District Court yesterday on the charge. Counsel Raoul Neave said Morrison's chronological age was no indication of his development level.
"It is much more appropriate to regard this as offending between contemporaries. The defendant was relating to people who he felt comfortable with, who were at the same level as himself."
Mr Neave said the psychiatric report showed Morrison as naive and unworldly, and of borderline intelligence. For the Crown, Carl Reaich said Morrison had taken the boys into his home and plied them with alcohol. Previously Morrison had pleaded guilty to indecent assault and not guilty to sexual violation. At trial he was found guilty of sexual violation. Judge Neil Hattaway sentenced Wilson to two years jail for sexual violation and a concurrent 12-month term for indecent assault.
