Background
From the Press, Christchurch , Nov 14, 1998
A rap song with disgusting lyrics was sung to a 15- year-old girl as she was subjected to a two-hour gang rape.
In the High Court in Auckland on Thursday Justice Silvia Cartwright jailed Noora O Mata Taia, 19, and Kapi Teiwa Mihaka, 22, both of Rotorua for eight years for their part in the violation in the city in April.
The Crown, represented by Annabel Markham, had been seeking jail terms of up to 15 years for the pair, who were found guilty by a Rotorua jury. A third man alleged to have been involved in the rape faces a retrial.
Ms Markham said the girl had been gang-raped for up to two hours by three men as others looked on. She suffered ``extreme violence'' to her genital area which caused such excruciating pain that she passed out. During the ordeal she was also subjected to a torrent of derogatory abuse. ``There was even a rap song made up calling her a `ho' (whore) bitch and slut,'' Ms Markham said.
