Sentenced to three years in August 2000
Background
From a Dominion story August 2000
Indecently assaulting three girls between the ages of 13 and 15 brought Donny Mokalei three years' jail when he was sentenced in the High Court at Wellington yesterday. Mokalei, 40, earlier pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the girls at Eltham, Wanganui and Porirua in 1983-84. Charges of rape and sexual violation were withdrawn.
Justice Heron said Mokalei would have got a lighter sentence were it not for his convictions for domestic assaults, drunken driving and dishonesty since 1984. Defence lawyer Val Nisbet said the offences had happened when Mokalei was in a bad relationship and he had since turned his life around.
