A depositions hearing for Newton Samuel Moki, 30, a fisherman, and his partner Cassandra Albert, 21, started in the Nelson District Court on Wednesday. The pair each face one charge of wounding their son with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one charge of failing to supply the necessities of life.
Moki, whose heavily tattooed face includes the words "Mongrel Mob Porirua", also faces an unrelated charge of driving while disqualified.

A 21-year-old Porirua man has been jailed for seven years for his part in an aggravated robbery at the Colonial Inn a year ago. Newtown Samuel Moki, unemployed, was earlier found guilty of aggravated robbery and kidnapping. Twelve people were held hostage and $2493 stolen from a safe during the December21 robbery. Justice Ellis said Moki played a full part in the robbery. He held the victims hostage while his co- offender, Jamie Tuhoe Mako, held up the barman. Mako and another co-offender, Charlie Karaka, were sentenced to 5 years 6 months and four years respectively after pleading guilty. Justice Ellis said he had to consider parity between the two main offenders, and Mako suffered serious injuries when he was shot in the leg by police after the robbery. His sentence reflected that punishment. Moki continued to deny the charge and had put the community to the trouble and expense of a trial, he said. He had also been given a two- year suspended sentence in 1994 for rape. Moki was sentenced to seven years jail for aggravated robbery and four for kidnapping, to be served concurrently. Defence counsel Val Nisbet said the sentence might be appealed.
From the Dominion Post 26/07/2007
A FORMER Mongrel Mob gang member who moved to Nelson to make a better life for himself has been jailed for four years for the armed robbery of a Wellington couple in their home. Jamie Tuhoe Mako, 35, of Motueka, appeared in Nelson District Court on Tuesday for sentencing, having previously admitted a charge of aggravated burglary and two charges of theft of a vehicle. Judge David McKegg said that in February last year Mako was involved in the Porirua chapter of the Mongrel Mob. Wearing gang regalia, Mako went to the complainants' house early one morning with two associates. The associates disguised their faces, and all three men were armed with hammers. When the male victim answered the door, Mako pushed him inside the house. The men demanded drugs and money, and Mako detained the couple while his associates searched the house. They left in the victims' two vehicles. Mako had since said he was owed money by the female victim.
