A West Auckland businessman was jailed for seven years for a "dastardly" sex attack on a young girl. Thirty-six-year-old Michael Philip Mueller was earlier found guilty by a jury on one charge of attempted rape and one of unlawful sexual connection with the 12-year-old. The girl was attacked in her bedroom just before Christmas 1995. Mueller’s fingerprints were found on the inside of window in the house.

Describing the attack as a "dastardly, gross piece of criminal behaviour" Justice Smellie said in the High Court at Auckland yesterday that Mueller had threatened the girl before sexually attacking and trying to rape her. The girl was known to a member of his family. Ross Burns, for the Crown, said there was evidence Mueller knew the girl’s parents were profoundly deaf. Defence counsel Paul Dacre said Mueller continued to deny the offending. As a result of his arrest Mueller was bankrupt.
