In the Rotorua District Court, Judge Phillip Cooper sentenced Naera to 5 years' jail after giving him a discount of 2 years for his young age and "immaturity" at the time of the rape. As well as the jail term, Judge Cooper ordered Naera be admitted to the Maori Focus Unit in prison and go through a sexual offenders' programme.
