Background
From the Daily News 8th August 1997
A WOMAN who woke up to find a masked man in her room suffered a devastating experience, Justice Tompkins said yesterday. The judge sentenced Wiremu Te Uru Kowhai Napia (31), Patea, to four and a half years jail after Napia was convicted of aggravated burglary and assaulting a woman with intent to cause sexual violation. Last December 6, the man appeared at the complainant's bed carrying a knife. He lay on top of her and held the knife to her neck. Her daughter entered the room after which Napia fled. "To undergo the terror of that experience has caused significant emotional disturbance," the judge said.
From the Daily News 17th March 2006
Napia was found guilty by a Palmerston North jury of sexual violation and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and sentenced to the open-ended term of preventive detention. He has to serve at least 12 years. He pleaded guilty to wounding a woman with intent to injure her. The victim suffered severe internal injuries after being stabbed in the genitals with what a surgeon said was probably a screwdriver. She was also hit on the head, causing a fracture that dented her forehead.
