Background
From this Southland Times article
A 47-year-old Invercargill man was jailed for eight years when he appeared before Justice Panckhurst, of Christchurch, in the High Court at Invercargill yesterday on five charges of indecently assaulting a girl over a three-year period. Hare Pu Neho, 47, of Invercargill, was sentenced to four years' jail on two charges of indecently assaulting a girl under 12 at Invercargill between January 11, 1995 and August 31, 1995.
He was also sentenced to four years' jail on two charges of indecently assaulting a girl when she was aged between 13 and 15 years at Invercargill and Riverton between January 1, 1996 and November 1998. He was previously found guilty on the five charges of indecent assault after a three-day trial in the Invercargill District Court on February 16.
He was also sentenced to two years' jail yesterday after admitting two charges of burglary at Waikawa Valley and Owaka on February 3 and sentenced to six months' jail on a charge of unlawfully taking a trailer at Invercargill on February 2. The jail terms were all concurrent. Crown solicitor Alistair Garland told the court Neho would creep into the room where the complainant was sleeping and indecently assault her until she woke up or told him to stop.
Justice Panckhurst said after reading the report he had no doubt the girl was scarred as a result of the abuse. Since the indecent assault she had had trouble sleeping at night and distrusted men, he said. "I think the long-term effects for her are probably unclear at this stage." Justice Panckhurst said there was also a "striking similarity" between Neho's previous convictions and the recent charges.
The court heard how Neho in 1986 was sentenced to three and a half years' jail for rape. In 1990 he was sentenced to two years and five months' jail for indecently assaulting a girl in her early teens. Justice Panckhurst said Neho was either in denial or had no insight into the harm his actions had caused his victims. "I will formally warn you that this is the end of the road." Next time a sentence of preventive detention would be enforced, Justice Panckhurst said.
