Background
From NZ Herald story 4th October 1991
A man who escaped from Kingseat Hospital subjected a 17-year-old Parnell woman to a two and a half-hour nightmare of rape and sodomy, the High Court at Auckland heard yesterday. Michael Brian Wayne Paikea admitted raping and sodomising the woman and forcing he to perform oral sex on him.
Paikea, aged 35, unemployed, also admitted robbing the woman and breaking into her home. Mr Justice Robertson remanded him in custody to October 24 for a pre-sentence report. The judge was told by defence lawyer Mr Paul Dacre that Paikea had been medically examined and was fit to plead.
Mr Aaron Perkins, for the Crown, said that the woman, who was in bed with severe stomach cramps, was disturbed by a noise around 1.30 am. She thought it was her boyfriend coming in and did not take any notice. Mr Perkins said that Paikea leapt on the woman, throttling her and punching her around the face, and threatened to kill her.
He was offered money and the television to leave her alone but he said he was not interested. Over the next two and a half hours Paikea raped her four times, sodomised her twice and twice forced her to perform oral sex. At one point he ordered her to "stop whimpering."
The woman was made to shower a number of times and clean her teeth to destroy any evidence of the attacks. Paikea also showered and cleaned his teeth. He also cut stains out of the bedding material and made the woman wash fingerprints off a beer can and a tea cup he handled. The woman was ordered to vacuum his muddy footprints from the carpet. Mr Perkins said that before leaving, Paikea ripped out the telephone wires. The woman raised the alarm with the help of a neighbour and Paikea was picked up nearby by police.
We understand Paikea was ineligible for preventive detention at time of the Parnell sex attack because it was only available to convicted recidivist sex offenders i.e. if an offence was committed before September 1993. Paikea was found not guilty of the American tourist sex attack on the grounds of insanity in November 1990.
