Sentenced to 300 hours community work in October 2007
Background
From Christchurch Press story 6th October 2007
A man has escaped jail on a charge of possessing an objectionable publication
after a police search turned up a computer disk with images of young children
in sex acts with adult men.
Gregory Edwin Piper, 33, a student, was sentenced to 300 hours community work after he admitted the charge. Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish said that on August 29 last year, under Piper's mattress, police found a disk containing 48 images of young girls aged five to 10 engaged in sexual acts with men. The images were graphic and disturbing.
"A lot of people in your position think possessing indecent material is victimless. It is not, and if there was not a market, the offending would not be occurring," the judge said. Prosecutor Tim Mackenzie noted the possession occurred in Piper's home, and called for jail with a starting point of six to nine months.
The judge said that in July, Piper was jailed for eight months on charges of theft by a person in a special relationship, and five of obtaining by deception. He was released on home detention. Piper was also sentenced to supervision for nine months, and ordered, by the judge, to take treatment and counselling as directed.
