In the Auckland High Court, Justice Ailsa Duffy set a starting point of 12 years but gave a three year reduction because of Pooley's guilty plea and the absence of previous convictions. The judge agreed with the Crown that Pooley's offending was a breach of trust and that it was premeditated offending against vulnerable victims.
