MUFFLED sobs spread through a capacity public gallery of supporters when Levin's "Dr Siri" was today jailed for two years by Justice Gendall when he appeared in the High Court at Palmerston North. Daluwatumulle Gamage Ravindra Ramyasiri, 54, general practitioner, was last month convicted after an 18-day trial on three of 13 charges of indecency against woman patients. Justice Gendall said today he had not been surprised to received an 832-signature petition from Levin, plus 130 letters, expressing support for Ramyasiri and inability to understand the guilty verdicts.

The judge said they underlined the tragedy of what Ramyasiri had brought upon himself, his family and supporting patients, and the tragedy of what the law required him to do -- jail a man who had a fine record of service to the community in which he lived and worked. Ramyasiri's offending against the two teenagers was a gross, criminal breach of the trust on which all women depended when they saw medical practitioners. For indecent assault on a girl under 16, the charge representative of incidents of breast-fondling over two years to 1993, Ramyasiri was jailed for 18 months. Indecent assault in 1988 on a 19-year-old, in that he uncovered her breast and lay his cheek against it, also brought an 18-month term. His penetration of the same young woman's vagina with his finger brought a two-year term. The sentences are to be served concurrently.
