Background
From the Daily News 26th March 2011
A man who teamed up with his two younger brothers to molest and rape two little girls has been sent to jail for eight years. Yesterday the New Plymouth District Court was told that David Lee Rawiri, 28, carried out the offences, in Te Kuiti, aged 15 and 16. On one occasion he and his brothers strung a rope over the rafters in a shed. They tied the hands of two girls aged 4 and 5, took off their clothes, and molested and raped them. Rawiri's brothers were 11 and 13 at the time.
Rawiri also admitted to sexually assaulting the girls' eight-year-old brother in a garage at the same house. Rawiri was sentenced on five charges, including two of raping the girls, one of unlawful sexual connection with a girl, unlawful sexual connection with a boy and the indecent assault of a boy and girl, all aged under 12. Defence counsel Rajan Rai said Rawiri came from a "depraved" background of serious violence and sexual abuse.
