From the Northern Advocate 7th May 2011
Two brothers have been found guilty of raping a woman inside a public toilet in Whangarei in 2007. Brook Rewa, 21, and Psalm Rewa, 22, learned their fate in the Whangarei District Court yesterday after the jury retired on Thursday afternoon but could not reach their verdicts that day. They were found guilty on charges of rape, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and each being a party to rape.
The jury rejected their evidence that the complainant was hitchhiking and that she asked for sex in return for a trip back home. The charges came after a four-day trial in which the complainant gave evidence on how the brothers forced their way into a disabled toilet she was in on Otaika Rd and raped her. Both were arrested and charged after DNA results came through, two years after the incident. Judge John McDonald has remanded the brothers in custody for sentencing on June 21.
