An Australian fugitive, who worked as a farm labourer near Cave for several months, has been sent to prison for 7 years. Manfred Eric Ruhl was arrested under the Fugitive Offenders Act 1881 when he was picked up in an early morning police operation at a property near Cave on January 20 this year. Ruhl had jumped bail in Australia, where he was wanted on 53 charges involving three complainants. Some of those charges alleged rape which in Queensland can carry a term of life imprisonment.

An arrest warrant was issued for him in Australia in February 1998 after he had failed to appear under the terms of his bail. Ruhl was sentenced in a Queensland court recently. Timaru detective Kevin Byrnes was uncertain how many charges Ruhl had eventually been convicted of. Ruhl, who had called himself David Roberts, had worked and lived on a property 6km from Cave for seven months before being arrested in January. His employer said he was unaware of Ruhl's past, but described him as a hard worker who could turn his hand to anything.
