A Kaiapoi man who indecently assaulted a boy on holiday in North Canterbury was sentenced to a six-month suspended prison term when he appeared in the Rangiora District Court. Graeme Keith Rumary, 42, a painter, pleaded guilty before Judge Adeane to assaulting a boy under 12 years on April 13 last year. He was yesterday placed on supervision for 12 months and ordered to undergo counselling and treatment as directed. His prison term was suspended for two years.

The judge refused to continue an interim order suppressing Rumary's name. He said the community was entitled to know the defendant's weaknesses. Counsel Zbigniew Maciaszek said the incident took place at a specific location where Rumary was effectively the caretaker. He encouraged family groups and children to stay with him and publishing his name would immediately identify a number of children who regularly visited the area. Detective Sergeant Rex Barnett said the complainant's parents had asked that Rumary's name be published.
