Background
From the Dominion Post 24/11/2006
The family of a nine-year-old victim of sexual assault could not contain their fury as her abuser was jailed for just over two years. As Robin Bruce Taylor, 43, walked into the dock at Masterton District Court yesterday and looked toward the girl's family, a voice called out, "You monster". Less than 10 minutes later, when Taylor was sentenced to two years and three months in prison, members of the family gasped with disbelief and dismay. "This can't be happening. It is nothing more than a slap on the hand," one relative said when the jail term was announced.
Taylor had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and committing an indecency with a girl aged under 12. The maximum possible jail term for the offences was 20 years. The victim's mother, supported in court by friends, wept as she listened to proceedings. The victim, described as developmentally delayed, had been sexually assaulted by another man when she was just 18 months old, something Taylor had known about. Crown prosecutor Jo Murdoch told the court there had been a serious breach of trust involving a young vulnerable victim. She sought a minimum five-year jail term.
