In the Auckland High Court, Justice Potter set a starting point of eight years but reduced it due to Tia's guilty plea and other mitigating factors. The judge said if Tia was to be sentenced under our current law he would have faced a maximum sentence of twenty years rather than seven years. She said the increase in penalties reflects the abhorrence with which society views this type of offending but she had to sentence Tia in accordance with the penalties that applied at the time of the offending.
