Background
The pre-sentence report states Tiriamai (who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1990) showed no explicit remorse for his offending, nor any victim empathy. The fact that he has offended in a similar manner previously, albeit in 1989 suggests that he has limited insight into his offending behaviour and a low motivation to change. It is suggested that his mental illness if it remains untreated may act as a further barrier to meaningful intervention. The probation officer assesses Tiriamai as having a low motivation to change and a high risk of re-offending.
