A FEILDING teacher of Maori cultural studies, recognised as a valued worker among youth, has been jailed for having sex with a 14- year-old pupil. Dallas David Toko, 32, apologised in Feilding District Court this week for having "destroyed the dreams" and the respect for him, of so many young people."I have destroyed my career, I have shamed my iwi and my ancestors," Toko told Judge Barry Lovegrove.

The punishment of the court, "which I dread with my entire soul", could never surpass the deep shame he would suffer for the rest of his life, he said. The court was told that on July 12 Toko and the girl met after- hours at the school Maori culture room. They kissed, cuddled, petted and Toko gave her oral sex. She later went to Toko's home to a sleep-over with others. During the night they had sex.

Defence lawyer Hugh O'Connell said Toko fully accepted there was no excuse for abusing his position of trust. Toko was known as a good teacher and was respected for his work among young people. However, stressed by a relationship breakup he was emotionally vulnerable. He had failed to control himself, and knew he had shamed himself, seriously embarrassed his two daughters and "disgusted his friends".

Judge Lovegrove said the breach of trust as a teacher and the age disparity made the offending serious. But the court accepted Toko's profound regret and sorrow, that there was no issue of sinister seduction or of non-consent and that Toko had no previous offending. He jailed Toko for 16 months. The name of the school was suppressed.
