Background
The Palmerston North High Court was told Walker had an extensive history of alcohol abuse. He was assessed in a pre-sentence report as having very little insight into his offending, appearing to slip "in and out" of a willingness to take responsibility for his offending depending on the type of question, is at "extremely high risk" of reoffending should he be released, showing little regard for his victim. However a psychologist assessed him being at "moderate to high" risk for reoffending.
