A Rotorua man who sexually assaulted children from a local church was jailed for six years and six months. Te Maera Walker, 38, a bushman, had pleaded guilty to five charges of indecently assaulting girls aged under 12, indecent assault of a girl aged 12 to 16, unlawful sexual connection, and inducing a girl to perform an indecent act upon him at Rotorua between December 13, 1993, and May 21 last year. Justice Potter, in the High Court at Rotorua, ordered Walker to undertake a special course for sexual offenders while he was in jail. She said he had placed his victims in great peril. Children had a right to be kept safe from such people, Justice Potter said.

However, the judge noted Walker's strong religious convictions, his remorse, his early guilty pleas, and his genuine desire to change. Crown prosecutor Fraser Wood said Walker was jailed after previous convictions for similar offences. His actions were blatant and aggravated by the fact that he was placed in a position of trust by the children's parents, who had gone to his church. Counsel Brett Cooper said Walker had confessed to his crimes and was motivated to change after taking a "Steps to Safety'' course run by Anglican Social Services in Hamilton. He had not committed any further offences since leaving prison earlier this year.
