Background
From Christchurch Press story 28th November 2008
A 31-year-old Christchurch man has been jailed on 26 charges relating to child pornography after an operation between the United States FBI and the Department of Internal Affairs. Daryl Hugh Watson, an electronics assembler, was sentenced at the Christchurch District Court yesterday to two years and three months in prison for making, distributing and possessing objectionable publications. Judge John Bisphan said the offences were serious because of their number and nature. Around 16,000 files and 700 video clips depicting toddlers and very young boys being sexually abused were found on Watson's computer, DVDs and CDs.
"What you (Watson) did could be regarded as passive offending, but it condones the abuse the children suffer," Judge Bisphan said. "People who look at this, pass it on and use it, encourage those who actually photograph the children. That is the evil that sentencing must address." The offences carried a starting point of three to three-and-a half years' imprisonment but mitigating factors, including no previous convictions, reduced Watson's sentence.
The FBI told the department a New Zealander had been identified as subscribing to a website dealing in child sexual exploitation, said Internal Affairs deputy secretary Keith Manch. "We were given a name, credit card number and email address, which led us to Watson," Mr Manch said. "This is a further example of the international effort that takes place to combat this trade. It must stand as a warning to other offenders that it is only a matter of time before they get caught."
