Background
From Dominion Post story 7th Feb 2008
A distinguished primary school teacher who became addicted to child pornography has sworn he never intended to hurt children and resigned from his role as school principal to be sure.
Ian Wilson, 62, was sentenced to 10 months home detention and banned from accessing computers. He was sentenced in the Palmerston North District Court this week after pleading guilty to one count of distributing and 10 counts of possessing objectionable material.
After a tip-off from German authorities, police raided Wilson's Havelock North home in March and found he had downloaded more than 9000 pornographic images of young boys, some showing explicit sex acts, and swapped 52 with an unknown person through an Internet chatroom. Wilson said yesterday that he felt a deep remorse and shame for his actions and had undergone a lot of counselling to deal with his "addiction".
"I realised I had a problem and I never wanted to hurt any children," he said. "I'm relieved that the court case is over and can try and get on with my life again now." Lawyer Fergus Steedman said Wilson took his pension and retired as principal of a Hawkes Bay school in 2004, because he did not want to put any pupils in danger.

Teachers will now have to prove they are of good character and fit to teach.
New criteria were announced yesterday by the Teachers Council, the body responsible for registering teachers and disciplining those who misbehave.
And retired Havelock North principal Ian James Wilson, 62, pleaded guilty yesterday to 11 child pornography-related charges from between February 2006 and March 2007. More than 9000 illegal images were found on his home computer. Wilson, a former head of Lucknow Primary in Havelock North who retired in 2004, will be sentenced in February.
From Dominion Post story 30th Nov 2007
A RETIRED Havelock North principal is due to appear in court next week on 11
charges of having child pornography on his computer.
Ian James Wilson, 62, was principal of Havelock North's Lucknow primary school till 2004. The Internal Affairs Department has charged Wilson with having objectionable material on his USB drive, along with numerous objectionable images on his main drive.
The alleged offending occurred between February last year and March this year. The Internal Affairs Department alleges that, in June last year, Wilson distributed 52 images to an unknown person. He was reported to the department by German authorities, which were alleged to have found him accessing an Internet site forum. He is one of several New Zealanders alleged to have accessed the site.
Wilson told The Dominion Post the charges would be heard in Palmerston North District Court next week. He said he had no previous convictions and intended to make a statement when he appeared. He would make no further comment. The Dominion Post understands that Wilson is one of several New Zealanders identified by German authorities.
